Yompai works with a small village Baan Lek Nam Pai Yai in the northern part of Thailand. They have been set up by the Thai queen as a restoration project. From being slash and burn nomadic farmers, they now grow organic vegetables, fish farm and create handmade utensils from repurposed teak wood. We purchase directly from them, all the pieces are made in the village, they are laquer free, chemical free, dye free and are made to be used. The idea of the queens was both to stop the villagers going to Bangkok to work in bars or as taxi drivers by providing sustainable work in their home, and also to restore the environment so the villagers also replant the hillsides in teak and other native trees to restore the ecosystem. Each piece we sell, contributes directly to this.
